The Liverpool striker opened the scoring for his country in their World Cup qualifier against Malta by making the most of an inviting cross from club colleague Jordan Henderson.
Sturridge moved onto the delivery from the right hand side and nodded a precise header back into the opposite corner, inches inside the post.
He told FATV: “I don’t score a lot of headers but over the last couple of years I’ve actually started scoring them more often – so I think I might be getting the knack for it. But I don’t want to talk too soon!”
Henderson was also involved in creating the second for the Three Lions – converted by Dele Alli – as they eased to a 2-0 victory on the road to the 2018 World Cup.
Next up in Group F is a trip to Slovenia, with the two nations set to face off on Tuesday night.
“It’s going to be a difficult game for us but it’s about our preparation,” said Sturridge.
“We’re not worried about them, we’re worried about how we’re going to go out there and do what we do best.
“It’s important to just keep winning games. It’s not about how many goals you score; if we win 4-0 or 5-0, 1-0 is the exact same result and that’s what matters most.
“As long as we keep winning games and performing well, that’s the most important thing.”
Interim England manager Gareth Southgate named Sturridge in his starting line-up – and the 27-year-old is keen to keep clocking up minutes at international level.
He added: “We’ll see what happens. I was starting a lot before the World Cup, I was playing all the time, and at the Euros I started to play again. Hopefully now I can continue playing.”
